Upland Hunt Tests & Tournaments

There are different types of hunting tests, reflecting the different types of bird hunting. - retriever tests (on land and in the water), pointer tests, and flushing or upland tests.  There are also versatility tests which include both upland and retriever work.  It is the upland and versatility tests that we are interested in on the Upland Poodle website.

Currently there are few places where a poodle can be tested and certified at upland hunting.  With the start of the Poodle Club of America's Upland Hunting Program, the opportunities for poodles have been expanded.

The following organizations allow poodles to participate in their upland or versatile gundog tests and tournaments.
PCA - (Poodle Club of America) - has a three level upland program, and a two level versatility program.
HRC (Hunting Retriever Club) - has an upper level upland title (UH) and a top level versatility title (GRHRCH).
NAHRA - (North American Hunting Retriever Association) - has three upper level versatility titles.
UGA - (Upland Gundog Association) - is a new organization, now offering events with two levels of titling.
Tournaments - various tournaments, including the National Bird Dog Circuit, sometimes allow poodles to compete.

The Poodle Club of America (PCA)

In December 2012, the Poodle Club of America (PCA) approved an Upland Hunting Program and a Hunting Poodle Certification Program to complement its retriever WC/WCX Program.

The Poodle Upland Hunting Program has three levels of upland certificates.

  • The Upland Instinct Certificate (UIC) is for Poodles with instinct, desire, and some basic obedience, but little or no field experience.  It tests the dog's DESIRE to hunt birds, leaving its handler as needed to do so, returning when called, and showing soundness under gunfire.
  •
  • The Upland Working Certificate (UWC) is an entry level test for Poodles who are upland hunters and for non-hunting Poodles with desire and some training.  It tests the dog's ABILITY to hunt, produce birds for the guns, and be a somewhat useful hunting dog.
  •
  • The Upland Working Certificate Excellent (UWCX) is for Poodles who excel at upland hunting and for non-hunting Poodles with instinct, desire and training.  It tests the dog's USEFULNESS as an upland dog by honoring another hunting dog in the field, trailing a cripple, and having a good delivery of the birds to the handler.
  •
  • The next level, sometime in the future, would require steadiness to shot and possibly working in brace, showing a finished upland dog.  It would test TRAINABILITY and training.

  • The Hunting Poodle Certification Program was set up to honor Poodles who are both accomplished upland hunters and waterfowl retrievers.

  • The Hunting Poodle Certificate (HPC) will be awarded to Poodles who have earned a WC in retrieving and a UWC in upland hunting from the Poodle Club of America.  They have demonstrated a working capability in hunting, flushing, marking, swimming and retrieving.
  •
  • The Hunting Poodle Certificate Excellent (HPCX) will be awarded to Poodles who have earned both a WCX and a UWCX from the Poodle Club of America. They have demonstrated the abilities needed to be excellent hunting companions.

Note - the rules will be moved to the PCA website soon.

North American Hunting Retriever Association (NAHRA)
"Conservation of game through the development of trained retrievers"

NAHRA has 4 levels of tests.  The Started and Hunter levels are entry level retriever tests, resulting in the SR and HR titles.  The Intermediate and Senior levels are versatility tests, combining upland and retriever series.  They result in the MHR, GMHR, and GMHRCH titles. Unfortunately, NAHRA clubs and tests are only available in 15 states and 3 Canadian provinces, leaving large areas of the country without access to them.

    Upland Tournaments

There are a number of run-and-gun style upland tournaments and other tests which poodles compete in.  Poodles have run in National Bird Dog Circuit events for several years,  Some of the other tournaments still do not allow poodles.

    National Bird Dog Circuit

The National Bird Dog Challenge Association  was established in 1995 in the midwest to settle the question of who had the best bird dog.  By 2000, it had expanded to 650 members and 50 tournaments.  In 2011 the NBDCA reorganized, becoming the National Bird Dog Circuit, staffed by all volunteers.
